GOONELLABAH'S Steven Avery is one of many Northern Rivers locals trading in four wheels for two.

Mr Avery recently bought a new motorcycle and he said riding a bike, as opposed to driving a car, had lowered his cost of living.

aIt's economical on fuel, especially if you're just riding it around town,a he said.

aWhen I filled it up the other day it cost me $23. That was on a Sunday and it's still got a full tank after riding it every day.a

Another benefit for motorcyclists is insurance and registration are cheaper, Mr Avery claimed.

In the past six months, City Bikeworx in Lismore has experienced a spike in sales and dealer principal David Waldron said small-to-medium-sized bikes, such as the Kawasaki Ninja 250, have been popular.

aA lot of people buy smaller bikes because they're cheaper on petrol,a he said.

aThe market is sucking them up faster than we can sell them. …
