HOCKEY: Maryborough had hearts racing and the blood pumping at the under-15 girls state hockey championships at Buderim.

A last-minute goal, three pulsating extra time periods and tense penalty strokes will do that.

Maryborough held its nerve to land the division two title after edging out Gladstone in a thrilling grand final.

After going through the competition undefeated, Maryborough looked destined to fall at the final hurdle after trailing 1-0 with less than a minute to play.

Enter Kayla Sengstock.

The Maryborough captain sent the game into extra time after hitting the back of the net with a scorching penalty corner delivered by Tiegan Jackson.

After three scoreless rounds of overtime, in which both teams were reduced to just five players, goalkeeper Jessica Switzer made two saves in penalty strokes to clinch the game for Maryborough.

The win gave the team automatic entry into next year's division one competition. …
