Sport of Kings Saddled for Jail Protest

THE message that the NSW Government needs to overturn its decision to slash 107 Grafton Jail jobs has jumped the barriers into the July Racing Carnival.

At yesterday's Grafton Cup barrier draw, protest organiser Tony King had the chance to talk about the picket line at Grafton Jail and today's rally when NBN sports presenter Mike Rabbitt interviewed him.

aThere were 300 people there and they heard me in complete silence,a Mr King said.

He outlined the economic effects that will hit Grafton if this decision is implemented, not only on the community from the loss of jail wages but also to companies who provide support services to the jail.

Afterwards he asked people at the lunch to spare five minutes to go down to the picket lines at the jail entrances and show their support for the protesters.

Spokeswoman for rally organisers Clarence Valley Community Union, Sharryn Usher, said they were expecting to double the crowd at the first rally today at Memorial Park at 12. …
