A Golden Period Is Ahead for Black Cats

SUNDERLAND captain Lee Cattermole will report back for pre-season training today fitter than ever and desperate to begin what he believes could be a golden period for the club, writes NEIL CAMERON.

The midfielder struggled towards the end of the last campaign with a persistent ankle injury which affected his form, and meant he missed a couple of games during the run-in.

However, the 24-year-old returns to work this morning, along with the majority of the Black Cats firstteam squad, feeling fresher than he has for a long time - and impatient for the season to start.

Despite the fact the only new face at the Academy of Light is going to be Carlos Cuellar, who signed on a free after leaving Aston Villa, the air of optimism that hung over the club for the second half of last season has not gone away.

And the skipper can't wait to get started again after what, for him, has been too long a close season this time around. …
