Rates Pain Coming; Rise Could Be Lowest in 4 Years, but It's Still a Hike

ANOTHER rate rise is expected today, but Mayor Gerard O'Connell says the council has worked hard to keep it as low as possible.

aFor the last five weeks, we have been going page by page, line by line through the books of all the council departments looking for ways to reduce costs and pass those savings on to ratepayers,a Cr O'Connell said.

The mayor denied he had broken any election promise in overseeing a rise in rates, and the announcement of his election campaign in the Chronicle last November backs him up.

In announcing his tilt for the top Fraser Coast job, Cr O'Connell said his No. 1 commitment was simply to work as hard as possible to keep rates as low as possible.

He later stated rates should be frozen until a thorough examination of where money could be saved across all departments had been completed.

Cr O'Connell did not comment on the size of the proposed rate increase yesterday, not wishing to jump the gun before the full budget is finished today. …
