AFORMER North East journalist, author and broadcaster has died aged 80. David Bean, who lived at Lambley in Northumberland's Tyne Valley and once worked for The Journal's sister paper the Sunday Sun, died in hospital last month following illness.

Mr Bean was born in Tottenham in London and went to school at St Albans.

He came to the North East in 1954 to work as a journalist on various newspapers, including the Sunday Sun, initially living at Whitley Bay.

Mr Bean is said to have lived with his wife in a converted bus while working in Ashington for one North East title.

In 1960, he turned freelance, writing mainly for The Guardian and the BBC.

For the former, Mr Bean wrote a column entitled Letter from Lakeland, which include his satirical Chronicles of Boggerthwaite.

In the 60s, he was also part of a team of young journalists that worked on a radio programme entitled Voice of the People, based in Tyneside.

When that finished, Mr Bean began writing for Radio Four, creating a character named Alderman Blowforth which was a parody of the pomposity of North Eastern civic life.

He went on to make a number of films for the BBC, including his series Bean's Boots.

This ran for four or five years and saw him make use of his love of open spaces to explore various aspects of the Northern country including the Tyne Valley and the North Pennines.

The shows aired on BBC1 while his other series the Hopeful Traveller was screened on ITV.

Since 1959, Mr Bean is said to have written more than 500 documentaries for television and a comparable number for Radio Four.

Mr Bean also wrote a number of books, including Tyneside a Biography, The Tyne - the story of the river - and four novels. …
