TRINITY student Tamara Lennard has been announced as a finalist in the 2012 Whitlam Institute What Matters competition.

Her strong opinion piece on making a difference about gender equality stood out among the 3500 other entries from students across NSW and the ACT, judges said.

Tamara attributed the success of her piece to her immersion experience in the Solomon Islands last year.

aI focused my piece on the ability to make a difference and incorporated statistics and my own experience to help fuel my argument,a she said.

aDuring the immersion experience I was able to see how the society works over there and worked in the Women's Training Centre, where they learn basic skills like weaving and cookinga.

Tamara's ability to write has been previously recognised by the Sydney Morning Herald's Young Writer of the Year competition, but she said her future lay in the world of medicine.

aI am considering doing medicine, probably pediatrics and I hope to travel with medicine,a she said. …
