Killer's Family Speak Out

Article excerpt

TOO HARSH cousin Lewis A KILLER drink-driver caged for causing the horror smash that led to his friend's death is set to appeal against his sentence. Anthony Grant, 21, of Bellister Grove, Fenham, Newcastle, was jailed for eight years by an Edinburgh judge for crashing and then leaving John Quinnin for dead in his water-filled car.

Yet Grant's family have now revealed he plans to launch an appeal bid, saying his sentence was far too high for the crime he committed.

His cousin Lewis Grant, 18, of Swalwell, Gateshead, said: "His solicitor has spoken to him and he wants to appeal.

"It was heartbreaking for everybody at court. My heart goes out to John's family.

"But I don't think Anthony should be shouldering the blame. It's not like he held a gun to his head and told him to get in the car that day. They both knew that getting in the car when both were drunk was a bad thing.

"We didn't think he'd get such a long sentence.

"He's a young lad, it happened by accident. We know he shouldn't have been driving but at the end of the day one life has gone - they don't need to take another."

It was June 8 last year that John, 22, of Annitsford, North Tyneside, got into Grant's Vauxhall Vectra - which he owned despite having no licence or insurance - after they'd been drinking during a holiday in Scotland.

Grant raced along the A75 Gretna to Stranraer road at speeds of up to 86mph before clipping the kerb on a tight bend near Kirkcowan in Wigtownshire.

The car ploughed into a hazard marker post and trees, smashed into a telegraph pole and then rolled down an embankment before landing on its roof in a marsh.

Grant told paramedics he was alone in the car, ensuring he was the focus of their rescue efforts.

It was only after they pulled him free they realised John too was trapped, but he was dead when they pulled him out. …
