DABBING away tears, Jenny Thirlaway's proud family watched as she was crowned the Chronicle's Mum of the Year. S

Family and friends gathered at our special awards ceremony as the inspirational tales of our eight amazing finalists were recounted.

Emotions overflowed at the lunchtime ceremony and tissues were on hand as guests heard about each of our finalists' incredible lives.

There was barely a dry eye in the room at the moving ceremony, hosted by Metro Radio's Karen Wight at the Vermont Hotel, on Newcastle's Quayside.

But it is mum-of-two Jenny, of Wallsend in North Tyneside, who was crowned this year's Mum of the Year.

Jenny, 40, has been through four years of heartache, yet the inspirational mum is still smiling for her family.

After years of trying for children, Jenny and husband Scott were over the moon when Jenny fell pregnant with twins in 2008. But when Jenny went into premature labour at 34 weeks, son Jack was whisked off to the special care unit in Newcastle's RVI with breathing problems. However, when Jack recovered, twin Molly started fitting and doctors discovered she had meningitis.

After months of nursing her children back to health the family were thrown into turmoil again when Scott was told he had Hodgkin's lymphoma. He has since undergone chemotherapy, radiotherapy and two bone marrow transplants.

But Jenny, who was nominated by relative and friend Linzy Thirlaway, has been praised for how she has kept her family together through the heartache and struggle.

Jenny's own mum, Carol Hetherington, could not contain her joy as she watched her daughter receive her award.

Carol travelled from the Isle of Seil in Scotland with Jenny's dad Ron. She said: "We have always been proud of her but this has been really emotional."

Jenny, shaking as she accepted her award, said she was in shock. …
