THE ongoing discussion as to bus services and the routes they take is an interesting one.

But the underlying cause is not being mentioned. Readers will recall that some decades ago the public transport system was completely dismantled.

Amongst other things, the buses were deregulated and it was made impossible for local authorities to continue providing bus services.

A number of people made a lot of money along the way to the current private enterprise provision we have now and what we ended up with is the ownership of what was once a public transport system in the hands of the shareholders of companies such as Stagecoach and Arriva.

Many residents are quite rightly upset that buses are confined to the routes that make the money for the bus companies and plead with the council to help.

All cash-strapped councils can do is pay over vast subsidies to bus companies and their shareholders to try and persuade them to have a social conscience and provide a fairer service for all and restore much needed routes. …
