THE unrelenting drizzle of rain over of the weekend meant many sporting fixtures were cancelled, but not the monthly Gladstone Chess Club tournament.

Warm and dry inside, the kids battled it out, trying to outwit one another.

I, for one, have no idea how to play chess and don't even know if I have the mental faculties for it anyway.

It amazes me when I read about kids who started playing chess when they were just seven.

And it's great to see kids who are so enthusiastic about a game which has no controller attached to it.

Due to the wet weather, my own kids were trapped inside and they decided to get some of their board games out.

Admittedly, Monopoly doesn't require the same strategy and brain power as chess, it was still a good exercise for my girls. I played with them and the girls took great delight when I landed on their properties and had to pay the rent. …
