IT'S a tough task judging the North East Business Executive of the Year Awards.

For the 2012 awards a panel of business leaders has again been assembled to take on the challenge.

Now in their 29th year, these prestigious and closely-watched awards - which are run by the Evening Gazette, in association with The Journal on Tyneside - honour the region's top business people.

This year the panel has a new chairman - John Mowbray, director of corporate affairs at Northumbrian Water - plus a number of other new faces.

The 2012 judges are: *VINAY BEDI -divisional director and fund manager at Newcastle-based Brewin Dolphin Having worked in the region for 20 years, Vinay has been on the panel of judges for the North East Business Executive of the Year since 2000. He joined the business, then Wise Speke, in 1988, having previously worked in its Manchester office. He turned to fund management in 1998 and now specialises in managing portfolios for high-net-worth individuals, charities and pension funds.

*NICKI CLARK - deputy chief executive at Business & Enterprise North East Nicki is responsible for BE-NE's operations function, and leads on the development and implementation of new key initiatives. Her previous experience has been in international sales and marketing. She is responsible for managing and developing the BE-NE team which works with more than 30,000 customers a year.

*SARAH GREEN -regional director of CBI After graduating in law from Sheffield University, Sarah was admitted as a solicitor in 1999. She trained and qualified with Clifford Chance and then worked with Arthur Anderson Business Consulting. On returning to her native North-east she completed a part-time MSC in urban regeneration.

She joined the CBI in 2005.

* PROFESSOR GRAHAM HENDERSON - vice chancellor of Teesside University Becoming vice chancellor in 2003 after four years as deputy vice-chancellor (academic and development), he was awarded the CBE in the 2010 New Year Honours list for his outstanding services to higher education. *JOHN IRWIN - director of storeys:ssp John has practised in the North since 1970 and became a founder shareholder after the management buy-back of Storey Sons and Parker in 1991. …
