Hazel Celebrates 100th Birthday

AN AVID golfer and tennis player in her younger days, Hazel Manning has always been a keen walker and enjoyed being active throughout her long life.

On Thursday, July 12, Hazel was joined by family, friends and Capricorn Gardens residents and staff to celebrate her 100th birthday.

She was delighted to share her letters from Her Majesty the Queen, the Governor of Queensland Penelope Wensley, Prime Minister Julia Gillard, Queensland Premier Campbell Newman and Governor General Quentin Bryce with her guests.

While the letters from dignitaries were without a doubt a highlight of the day, Hazel took just as much enjoyment from sharing her cake with friends.

Hazel was born on July 12, 1912, at St Stephen's Road, South Brisbane, to doting parents Alfred Patrick Ellen and Louisa Ellen.

Education played an important role in Hazel's life. She attended Manly State Primary School followed by Brisbane Girls' Grammar before going on to work in the accountancy department at Dalgetys Brisbane. …
