IN THE last few weeks we have treated a number of pets for paralysis tick poisoning.

I have also been getting quite a few calls from people asking how to remove a tick which is attached to their dog or cat.

This is typical for this time of year, and it is a surprise to many people that ticks start this early, but it has been ever thus!

Tick Season will occur at different times depending on the locality up and down the Eastern seaboard, due to varying temperatures and conditions, with almost year-round ticks in Cairns and further south from us a later start and finish.

Locally in the Northern Rivers region, the a[approximately]Peak' season or highest risk months are September, October and November. a[approximately]Shoulder Season' months are July, August, December and January, with the first cases trickling in when it is still quite chilly, and the decline in numbers usually coinciding with the first really hot summer days in mid to late December. …
