AHOST of events are set to attract visitors to the region at the weekend. The Sunderland International Air Show will wow plane enthusiasts over Saturday and Sunday.

The coastline at Roker and Seaburn will be filled with the sights and sounds of one of the largest free airshows in Europe.

The event, now in its 24th year, started last night with music from The Risk and The Counterfeits Sixties, as well as fireworks and a night flight display. Today and Sunday feature a jam-packed programme with performances from the Red Arrows, the RAF Falcons, and a Battle of Britain Memorial flight.

The event is usually held over the last weekend of July each year, but has been brought forward to avoid clashing with the start of the Olympics.

Transport group Go North East, the region's largest bus company, will be running extra services to fly spectators to the Sunderland International Airshow. Special express bus service A1 will run every few minutes between Sunderland Interchange and Seaburn Park.

Service A2 runs every twenty minutes from Washington Galleries and Concord to Seaburn and hourly bus service A3 runs from Peterlee, Easington Village, Houghton-le-Spring and East Herrington.

Go North East will also be operating two frequent park and ride services from Downhill Sports Complex and Fulwell Quarry to Seaburn Park.

Martin Harris, commercial director of Go North East, said: "As well as these special services, we run frequent services to Sunderland from across our region. Our family day ticket is just pounds 11 for two adults and up to three children under sixteen for a day's unlimited travel and is great value for money. It's convenient, too - buy it on the day from a bus driver or in advance with a smart phone.

"The Sunderland International Airshow is a spectacular event and there's also the prospect of some summer sunshine arriving at last. Don't waste the day in traffic jams, let our buses get you there without the hassle of driving."

The Northern Pride Festival will also take place. The festival is usually held in Newcastle's Leazes POLICE'S PLACE AT PRIDE OFFICERS will be "Policing with Pride" again at the Northern Pride Festival being held today in Newcastle. …
