SURFING: North Shore surfer Jirah Laws claimed top billing at the Coast of Origin Regional Challenge at Alexandra Headland yesterday.

The 33-year-old, who was Australian Open champion at Bells Beach in 2006, reminded us of his wares with a wily performance in tricky two-three feet surf.

Laws won his heat and then claimed victory in the supercharge heat with a total of 13.70, edging Mudjimba's Ziggy Alberts (12), Noosa's Tom Cervi (8.30) and North Shore's Josh Sherwell (4.30).

C[pounds sterling]I was actually out the back and the tide had come right in. A couple of the other guys were surfing in the shore break but I knew I had to catch one from out the back to get a long ride to get the score that I was going to need,C[yen] he said.

C[pounds sterling]It wasn't looking too good and then I sort of picked one off and it went all the way to the beach and I was lucky enough to do a lay-back re-entry into the shore break and successfully finish it. …
