ONLY a week ago, Don Reed was sleeping in a tent along the roadside of some of Queensland's least travelled territory.

Today the Noosa retiree is heading off on a completely different adventure.

He is travelling to Seattle, America, to pick up a yacht for a sailing trip to Alaska.

Mr Reed is heeding advice given to him years earlier a take retirement in instalments.

Sailing to Alaska will be somewhat relaxing after the experience of the past fortnight.

Mr Reed was racing around Queensland in his 1994 Falcon Longreach ute as part of the Endeavour Rally.

Starting at Toowoomba, Mr Reed and Noosa real estate agent Rod Baker took off on the 4500km journey to raise funds for the Endeavour Foundation.

This was Mr Reed's third rally a his second behind the steering wheel.
