IT'S that time of year again Co smack bang in the middle of winter and the coldest we have had for some time.

With junior anglers knee-deep in the middle of school work and assignments, there is plenty of beach, river and boat space for some uninterrupted fishing time.

Despite the cold, it has been nice to see persistent anglers still out and about on the milder of the winter days and even popping heads in with a feed of fish as we open for business some mornings.

Those lucky people who are blessed with the ability to withstand chilly temperatures would be taking advantage of most other anglers' preciousness.

It seems winter bream, jew, tailor and snapper are not feeling too cold either as they are out and about ... and hungry. There have been some top captures gracing photo albums and many anglers are now emailing in phone photos and videos of their winter spoils.

August should be filled with many of the same opportunities. The reefs will fish well on the making tides for all species and expect a run of winter mackerel to entice a few more people out and about. With the abundance of baitfish around, many pelagic species will be on the hunt.

The best thing about August is the annual run of snapper, coral trout and species such as mahi mahi in the waters between the coastline and outer reefs. Trolled skip baits, lures, mullet and yakkas are a great skill to learn if you are chasing these fish.

First look for the bait schools that are usually given away by gannets, cormorants and other birds of prey diving around them. Then, troll around the edges of these schools rather than straight through them.

Baited breath: Bait presentation and quality can mean the difference between a 5kg snapper or coral trout and a barely legal fish. Big reef fish don't get to their size by accident. …
