Inspirational Alex Fought on and on; Mum and Dad's Tribute to Brave Music Student

GRIEVING parents have paid tribute to their inspirational son and his determination to beat the odds stacked against him when he was diagnosed with brain cancer.

Talented drummer Alex Thompson, 20, was studying for a music degree in London when doctors discovered a massive tumour in his right frontal lobe in June last year.

Three days later he was undergoing six hours of surgery at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle to remove part of his brain, after his family were told he was unlikely to survive the weekend without the operation.

Alex came through the surgery and was able to go home a few days later. He delighted his family by soon being back behind his beloved drum kit, and resuming his studies at Tech Music School in London in September.

Last week, however, he finally succumbed to the disease, and passed away peacefully at home in Stead Lane, Bedlington, Northumberland, where he lived with his father Brian, mother Angela and sister Eilish, 18.

Alex amazed his family, friends and medical professionals with his upbeat attitude to his cancer, which he repeatedly vowed would not beat him. After a biopsy was carried out following his surgery, he said he didn't want to know the prognosis, because he was determined to stay positive and not live with a potential death sentence.

Alex, a former student at Bedlingtonshire High School, had gone on to study for a bachelor of music degree in the hope of making a career as a session drummer. He was told he had the brain tumour after suffering bad headaches and nausea in April last year, and being referred by a worried GP to an oncologist at Charing Cross Hospital.

His father brought him back to the North East where he underwent the lifesaving surgery, and then had eight months of radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatment. …
