Man Fined $400 for High-Speed Smash

A BUNDABERG man who caused a three-vehicle crash involving a semi-trailer and caravan has been fined $400 for the 110kmh smash.

Leslie Arthur O'Brien, 54, was attempting to overtake in a 90kmh zone on July 27 when the crash happened.

Yesterday he faced Bundaberg Magistrates Court and pleaded guilty to one charge of driving without due care and attention.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Fiona Ward said O'Brien was in a line of vehicles that had been released from roadworks on the Bruce Hwy when he tried to overtake.

Lawyer Geoff Ebert said O'Brien was trying to overtake a semi-trailer when the lane came to an end.

C[pounds sterling]My client was passing the semi-trailer which indicated right, so my client had the choice of braking heavily and retreating or accelerating,C[yen] he said.

Mr Ebert said O'Brien chose to accelerate to try to pass the truck. …
