DO we care one iota about the results of pre-season friendlies? Naw, naw. Course not.

They are meaningless matches when under-strength teams merely concentrate upon getting fitness into their legs.

Win, lose or draw, it is not going to impact upon the Premier League or Europa League.

However, there is no reason to turn them into a farce.

Newcastle were involved in just that when they began their participation in the XII Trofeo Guadiana on Portugal's Algarve.

A 1-1 draw with Olympiacos was to be decided by a penalty shoot-out ... which ended 4-4. I mean, honest, pinch me. Am I awake or in cloud cuckoo land? Here was me thinking a penalty shoot-out continues until a winner is produced, yet the referee called off the match with the two teams still level.

Perhaps he had seen enough and had a cup of cocoa waiting by his bedside.

It seems the sun has got to the referees out in holiday land because the first match in the same naff tournament between Olympiacos and Braga also ended 1-1 and 4-4 on penalties. …
