FREYA Murray was outside her local supermarket when she discovered her weekly shop would not need as many items as usual after being called up for the London Olympics.

Chester-le-Street-based Murray was officially confirmed as the replacement for Paula Radcliffe in Sunday's marathon, with the world record holder cruelly missing out on a fifth Games due to a foot injury. The 28-year-old Scot enjoyed spending a few minutes at work this morning setting up out-of-office email alerts to make sure anyone who somehow missed the news will have to do without her services as a structural engineer until the end of the Olympics.

Murray said: "I got a text from Paula when I was outside Asda but I was back home by the time I spoke to George Gandy [head of endurance for UK Athletics],. "I was about to do the weekly shop but not quite, because I was hoping not to be there for most of the week!

"After the London marathon I knew I was a reserve for the Olympics.

"Since then I had it in the back of my mind I had to be ready just in case.

"I'd been kept informed of how things were going and had a couple of updates since April. Paula called me on Thursday and gave me an update from her point of view.

"I really appreciated her doing that.

"She gave me a bit more of the background and what the process was and her chances of being able to race.

"She explained how she was going to test it [on Sunday]to see if she could race."

Murray added: "It must have been a really tough call for her to make.

"I really felt for her, totally gutted.

I can only imagine how she feels, it must be horrible. She was upset but very positive for me and I hope she is able to recover.

"At that point I did not want to get carried away with myself.

"t might happen or it might not. If you've been selected for an Olympics, if there is a possibility then you are going to do it, but I knew there was a bit more of a possibility than previously and I got the official go-ahead on Sunday. …
