Byline: LINDSEY SAMPSON HUNDREDS of school pupils across Teesside are staying entertained throughout the holidays - and learning along the way - thanks to pounds 50m Government funding for summer schools.

At least 13 schools on Teesside have been able to open their doors to help pupils from disadvantaged areas in their step up from primary to secondary school.

The new summer school programme was announced by Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg in September 2011.

The pounds 50m was made available to schools through the pupil premium, which provides additional funding for more disadvantaged pupils.

As part of a two-week summer school being held at Ormesby's Unity City Academy, 140 students - from UCA and local feeder primary schools - are being given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to attend the Olympic Games this week.

The academy's transition co-ordinator, Howard Leighton, said: "We are very fortunate to be taking most of these students - 140 of them - to the Olympics, where they will be watching handball, volleyball, basketball and show jumping.

"The show jumping has been a really popular choice, because it's not something they would normally get chance to see."

And the youngsters were already getting into the Olympic spirit during the first week of the summer school, with Olympic-themed activities held at the school, including music, science, numeracy and literacy activities, sports, art and visits to local attractions.

Jordan Robinson, 12, was one of the UCA pupils taking part. He said: "I wanted to come and do the science because I enjoy it. It's a bit different to the things we do in normal science class."

And seven-year-old Heidi Hunt-Lucas said: "We've done basketball, illustration and science - I made a rocket.

"I'm looking forward to making doughnuts next. …
