On Road to Award Record; He Knows Uno Candidate for 2012 Run of the Year

Article excerpt

WIDELY travelled greyhound He Knows Uno staged an amazing performance to win the group 2 AWM Distance Challenge at the Meadows in Melbourne last Saturday night.

Mick Patterson's CyMr Versatile' has won races at seven different tracks from Ipswich to Melbourne.

His record at Ipswich is three wins from seven starts.

He Knows Uno was voted the Australian run of the year for 2011 with a stunning 520 metres performance at Wentworth Park.

Last Saturday's fantastic win, to give those top Victorian stayers such a start and run them down, could be the 2012 run of the year.

I'm pretty sure I'm right in saying that He Knows Uno is about to set a record.

He was a Queensland greyhound of the year finalist in 2010 and 2011 and a New South Wales GOTY finalist in 2011.

It's reasonable to assume he will be a finalist in both states for this year. That would make it five times for the son of Primo Uno and Honeymoon's Over to be a greyhound of the year finalist. And he deserves to win one too.

Dashing Corsair tipped him out in Queensland in 2010 and 2011, while Zipping Lad was the NSW winner last year.

Great stayer Bold Trease was Victorian greyhound of the year in 1987 and a finalist in 1986 and 1988.

Three times as a GOTY finalist is a superb effort, and here's He Knows Uno likely to make his tally five.

While records from the 1970s and 80s are a bit sketchy, I doubt that any greyhound has ever done that. What a dog!

Darwin Cup

TWO heats of the group 3 Darwin Cup were run last Monday night.

Both winners hail from NSW.

John Vandenberg's Penetrator was a box one winner of the first heat in 31.31, beating Queenslanders Fourteen Quid and Time Will Tell.

Brisbane trainer Pat Dennis sent Fourteen Quid to the care of Darwin mentor Ron Phillips for the series.

Tony Brett trains Time Will Tell who got back in the second half of the field mid race. …
