Shops Down and out; Historic Redbank Complex Demolished as Updated Centre Rises

REDBANK residents looked on as a block of familiar old shops was flattened yesterday to make way for a brand new complex.

The long-standing shops, which owner Manos Saridakis estimated were more than 80-years-old, will be replaced by a 43-bay car park.

The shops stood facing the railway line at 59 Brisbane Rd.

Retailers, including the newsagency and computer store that used to occupy the buildings, have already moved into the new complex.

Mr Saridakis said the new two-storey centre would be a welcome update for the community.

aThose buildings had a lot of history, but they were just too old and not ideal,a he said.

Councillor Paul Tully said the old buildings, especially a cafe, were popular around the Second World War.

aWhen Redbank was a large military base the American troops and the Australian men would have a lot of fights over girls,a Cr Tully said. …
