JESUS said, C[pounds sterling]Have faith in GodC[yen]. Perhaps no word is more commonly used in connection with the spiritual life than Cyfaith'.

And yet, it's often one of the least understood when applied to the Christian life.

To gain an appreciation of what the word means, it might first be better to say what faith is not.

In the first place, faith is not knowledge. We do not Cyknow' absolutely. We can't be certain.

If we say that God is essentially mystery, we'll begin to understand that, in the spiritual life, we must on occasions be prepared to live with doubt.

It's impossible to Cyreason' ourselves into faith.

That's not to say that a great many devout Christians will be certain in their own minds exactly what they believe faith to be. But, when all is said and done, it's the heart that produces an awareness of God, not reason.

Again, faith is not sight. We cannot Cysee' absolutely and so faith has to live with darkness. It's said to be like driving through a fog and being able to see only a couple of Cycat's eyes' in front of us. …
