A COUNTY schools games proved a massive success by attracting a huge amount of young entrants.

The Tees Valley Games, which is a culmination of training and competition in Tees Valley schools, was held at various venues.

Being the first of its kind in the area, the event attracted more than 1,000 8-16-year-olds and was opened by the Mayor of Stockton.

Jean Lordon, executive director of Tees Valley Sport, said: "The School Games were a great success with a very high standard of competition played in a tremendous spirit by all the young people involved.

"The games could not take place without the help of our school sport partnerships, sports development teams, coaches, team managers and officials. It was fantastic to see so many of our partners working together to deliver such a great competition."

The two-day event featured 11 sports, including netball, rugby union, swimming and wheelchair basketball.

In addition to the packed programme of sports, participants had the opportunity to pose for pictures with the Olympic torch, after five local torch bearers turned out to support the event and help create a buzz around the London 2012 Games. …
