THE 1770 Dragons experienced the worst and then the best of our great Outdoors, winning the second regatta of the series on the way to defending their Wide Bay Area Dragonboat Series title at Seventeen Seventy last weekend.

It was a stark contrast to the first regatta of the series held at a cold, wet and windy Tin Can Bay in June where they finished last.

C[pounds sterling]It was pretty miserable (the first regatta),'' 1770 Dragons coach Sue Hughes said.

C[pounds sterling]We had a few of our paddlers away through illness and commitments and competed with only 16 paddlers compared to the others with 18 and 20.''

But tables turned in all respects last Saturday on home waters as the sun shone and a full complement of 1770 Dragons came away with the points after defeating arch-rivals Hervey Bay in the final.

C[pounds sterling]We won our three heats (versus Hervey Bay, Cooloola and Bundaberg) and then the final, and overall on times as well,'' Sue said. …
