Beware the Cats in Run to the Finish Line

IT'S often said the premiership race is like a marathon.

And in recent seasons Geelong has been like the Kenyans.

Okay, so it's not the best analogy. The Cats are anything but skinny, or African for that matter, but they have certainly been out in front or thereabouts when competitors are nearing the finishing line.

And despite drifting well back in the field mid-race this year Co and being written off as also-rans Co the Cats are coming home with momentum.

It's just a matter of whether they have left their run too late.

Despite their form recently Co when they have taken advantage of Essendon's inability to maintain a fit list, Adelaide's inability to win in Geelong and Hawthorn's inability to beat them, full stop Co they may have to stay put in the lower echelon of the top eight and try to win yet another flag from there.

Only once has a team come from fifth at the end of the home-and-away rounds Co Adelaide in 1998 Co to claim the premiership. Moreover, only twice has a team come from being sixth after round 19 Co where the Cats are now Co and only once has a team come from seventh after round 17, where the Cats were two weeks ago, to win it.

Geelong remains a game behind fourth-placed Hawthorn and two behind Collingwood and Adelaide with just four rounds left, but has shown it still has the ability and the inclination to be the best.

The side at least has the chance to keep the leading bunch well and truly on their toes by overtaking a wilting West Coast in Perth tonight.

The Eagles have been smashed in three of their past four games, particularly in contested possessions, lowering their colours in that department 149-179, 123-152, 123-162 against Sydney, Adelaide and Fremantle respectively.

And so the frontrunner for 10 weeks this year has dropped off the pace dramatically. …
