Hodgson to Cast Eye over Youngsters

ENGLAND manager Roy Hodgson insists next week's friendly with Italy is the perfect chance to assess the next generation of players after naming an experimental squad today.

Only 10 of the 23 players who travelled to Euro 2012 were included in the 22-man squad for next week's match in Berne.

Hodgson and coach Ray Lewington have spent the last two weeks closely liaising with clubs, many of whom are upset at the timing of Wednesday's friendly, coming just three days before the start of the domestic season.

It had always been Hodgson's intention to make changes for England's first match since the Euros and influenced by such consultations, he has decided to rest a host of key players. John Terry, Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard, Ashley Cole, Joleon Lescott and Glen Johnson are among the absentees but Steven Caulker, Jake Livermore, Ryan Bertrand and Tom Cleverley have all been included.

"I am just hoping that the clubs realise I have tried my best to keep a balance and in particular some of these younger players aren't necessarily ones who would start at their clubs anyway," said Hodgson. …
