THE Princess turned 12 the other day.

It seems like only yesterday she was born, and apparently it seems like that to her as well, as she informed me when she was curled up in our much-less-than-full-size bath.

aThis bath,a she said, ais getting smaller.a

aNo darling,a I replied. aYou're getting bigger.a

She looked at me and a shadow of sadness crossed her face.

aMum,a she said. aMy life is just going too fast.a

I laughed. aYou should see it from my end.a

aWell,a she said. aThat's the thing; if my life keeps going like this in two years I'll be your age and my life will be almost over.a

She looked so depressed. I tried very hard to be sympathetic.

aNever mind. You're not even a teenager yet; 12 this year and 13 next, that's how the numbers go.a

a13!a She positively bounced upright. aThat's right; everybody has that big party when they turn 13.a
