Free agent wide receiver Kevin Elliott was dating his college sweetheart at Florida A&M, Shonda Knowles, for a year before she told him: "My brother is going to the Patriots.''

"I thought she was lying. I said, 'Stop playing with me.' I said, aeWho's your brother' and I was like, 'Oh, wow,' " Elliott said.

Her older brother is former Jaguars running back Fred Taylor, who finished his career with the Patriots.

Elliott and Knowles have now been dating five years and she recently got her masters and is working for an accounting firm in Miami.

Taylor, who is spending the week with the team shadowing the scouting department as he tries to decide if he wants to work in pro football now that he's retired as a player, said he didn't try to convince Elliott to sign with the Jaguars.

But he was like, 'Yes, sir' and I'm like, 'Hold on, we've got to stop right here. Just call me Fred. Don't make me feel old.' ''

Elliott has impressed at times in drills.

"He's a big kid, strong, really physical, getting better in his development as a receiver. His deal is special teams. He's been pretty solid so far, I think,'' Taylor said.

When Elliott was asked if he's thinking about an engagement ring, he smiled and said, "We're getting our careers set right now and everything else will fall into place.''

Coach Mike Mularkey surprised the players by calling a 4 p.m. meeting about a half hour before practice was scheduled to start Wednesday. …
