WHINNEY Banks just missed out on winning the Jack Hatfield Sports Teesside League's first silverware of the season.

The league runners-up were beaten 5-3 by Macmillan Bowl finalists Richmond Mavericks in the annual JV Madden Trophy clash after an entertaining, end-to-end encounter.

Charlie Cox was man-of-thematch for the Mavericks, scoring four times, although Whinney Banks remained in the game until they conceded two goals in the last six minutes.

Two first division games and one second division match also took place on the opening day of the season.

Darlington Rugby Club started their top flight campaign with a 2-0 victory over Endeavour - formerly known as Dormans - with Nathan Walls scoring both goals.

Hemlington Smithy won 3-2 at Fishburn Park, a win which featured a Lee Whittle brace.

Guisborough had a 3-0 lead going into the final 10 minutes of their second tier clash with St Mary's College, with Dean Wilson scoring a first half brace. …
