NEWCASTLE Diamonds' top spot in the Premier League is under threat this weekend.

Depending on how secondplaced Somerset fare at Berwick tonight and Glasgow tomorrow, the Byker boys could be knocked off their lofty perch tomorrow night.

The Diamonds are in action at Byker tomorrow (7.00) in the return match against Redcar Bears, sponsored by Westoe Travel of South Shields.

The Diamonds did well to pick up a point on Teesside with a depleted team on Thursday, and though Ludvig Lindgren is back the challenge posed by Redcar's top five riders - who scored 43 points between them - still remains as all of them have notched big scores at Byker in the past.

George English, the Diamonds' team manager, has booked recent Berwick Swedish signing Robin Aspegren and Isle of Wight youngster Paul Starke to fill the reserve spots in the continued absence of the Worrall brothers.

English said: "I feel we need real clout at reserve for this derby so Aspegren, who rode for Swindon in the Elite League at the start of the season, has agreed to ride, and we are including Starke as he was due to turn out for us last Sunday. …
