We Must Get It Right for Spurs, Says Pardew

ALAN PARDEW hopes that "sleepy" Newcastle United will be well and truly on top of their game by the time Tottenham Hotspur come to St James' Park next weekend.

The United boss tore into his players at half-time at the Cardiff City Stadium after a dreadful first-half performance resulted in a 3-0 scoreline at the break.

Things improved partially in the second half but the "damage was done" according to Pardew. On a day to forget, Ryan Taylor was substituted before the half-hour mark while very few of his team-mates emerged with any credit.

Pardew told the Chronicle: "The first half was a disappointment.

"Our attitude and application were wrong and we were off the pace.

"We have been playing European games where the pace is a little bit slower.

"I knew this fixture was going to be a British game.

"It was faster and we were caught out. We were a bit sleepy. At half-time the damage was done."

Pardew sent his troops out early for the second half in a bid to liven things up and it paid off in some ways as they got back into the game through Shola Ameobi's well-taken spot-kick. …
