Danger Period Means Permits for Fires a Must

Article excerpt

THE Mid North Coast Bush Fire Management Committee has declared the starting date to the statutory Bush Fire Danger Period (BFDP).

From September 1, any person wishing to light a fire in the Coffs Harbour and Bellingen council areas will require a fire permit. It is different to a total fire ban, when no fires of any kind may be lit, even if you hold a permit.

aCommencement of the Bush Fire Danger Period does not prohibit landholders from burning and carrying out hazard reduction,a Rural Fire Service Inspector Ron Collingridge said.

aIn fact we continue to encourage properly prepared and managed hazard reductions.

aIt does mean, however, that permits will be required for lighting fires.

aFire permits are free and can be obtained from your local fire station or your local Rural Fire Brigade.a

For more information contact the Rural Fire Service Mid North Coast Team on 6651 6133 during business hours. There is no charge for a permit. …
