THE buzz surrounding acclaimed director P.J. Hogan's new movie Mental, which features cameo appearances from Ballina and Evans Head residents as well as students from a local high school, is raising hopes of another home-grown success story.

Filming, which took place in August last year, featured American actor Lee Schreiber and a production crew of approximately 80.

The crew filmed for three days at the waterslide and the neighbouring yacht club, which was transformed into a 1970s-style theme park before moving on to Evans Head.

Kadina High student Anna Podgorczyk was one of 20 from her school to be selected to play extras in the Ballina scenes with Schreiber.

aWe were treated really well,a Anna said.

Pool senior lifeguard Troy White was given a walkie-talkie by production staff and then spent two days turning the water to the slide on and off as requested.

With the movie only having screened at two film festivals so far including the Gold Coast, it's unclear how much of the local footage has remained in the final cut. …
