[bar] LTHOUGH this column is about life in the Surrey dressing room, I'm afraid I can't tell you much about that this week because I've spent the majority of the last two weeks away from the club, playing for the England Lions against Australia A. Much as I missed my Surrey boys, it was a fantastic experience and another opportunity for me to showcase myself in front of members of the England coaching staff.

Both matches -- at Old Trafford and Edgbaston -- were really hard-fought, tough games of cricket played at Test match quality venues against Test match quality players.

When the opposition includes blokes like Phil Hughes, Mitchell Johnson and Ed Cowan, you know that it's going to be a hard challenge.

What was fantastic, though, was getting back in time to be at the Kia Oval on Saturday to watch the last day of Surrey's crucial County Championship victory against Middlesex.

By mid-afternoon, when we needed one wicket and they required 10 runs it was more than a little tense in our dressing room! When we finally got the win, our whole squad were just so pleased for Gareth Batty.

Coming in as captain in the way he did was so incredibly difficult and he's taken to it like a duck to water.

Gareth's absolutely brilliant at getting the most out of this squad and to also see him play as well as he did at the weekend, taking six for 83 and win us the game, was a great feeling. …
