THE Daily Examiner meet-the-candidate forums have come and gone and they were certainly eye-openers for a number of reasons.

It was encouraging to see the number of people who showed up to find out what our would-be councillors are made of.

That said, it was a little disconcerting to see so few of the younger generation take an interest.

Politics needs all of us engaged if we want to shape our world into a better place.

As I said on both nights, I have huge respect for the candidates who stood in front of a packed and sometimes vocal crowd and waited for some unknown question to be fired their way.

I have the biggest respect for the candidates who stuck to their beliefs, even if they were unpopular or jeered by the crowd.

At least we know what they stand for and they have honestly portrayed their viewpoint instead of telling voters what they want to hear (as we've seen too many times of late). …
