THE Sunshine Coast's most senior minister Jarrod Bleijie admits the first few months of office have been tough but says small business understands that public servant cuts had to be made to bring the state's debt under control.

The Attorney-General and Member for Kawana said unions had stirred up discontent but the feedback he was getting from the wider community was the public service had to be trimmed.

aIf we don't get the finances under control then we won't have a public service to worry about,a Mr Bleijie told parliament this week.

aPeople understand that if we are telling them to balance their budgets ... they expect us to set the example.a

He denied it was a mistake by Premier Campbell Newman to talk of 20,000 too many public servants before the details of cuts had been decided in the State Budget.
