GREG Clancy's policy platform for Clarence Valley Council is headed by environmental issues.

The two local issues he feels most passionate about are saving the coastal emu and stopping coal seam gas exploration and extraction.

The campaign to save the coastal emu is something that Dr Clancy has been involved in for many years.

He believes that the Pacific Highway upgrade will disrupt the emu's migration patterns and push the species to extinction.

aWhere they want to put the Pacific Highway cuts straight through the emu's distribution path,a he said. aIt will also involve the removal of large areas of old-growth forest which is habitat to over 80 threatened species.a

When asked whether interfering with State Government's processes was responsible considering how hard it would be to actually get funding for the highway upgrade north of Grafton, Dr Clancy replied: aWe have not got the funding yet but it is better to sort this out before we get the funding. …
