Funny Way to Raise Cash for a Roman Fort

THE laugh is on the legions in a bid to raise money for a Roman fort project in Northumberland.

Artist Peter Phillips is donating a signed, limited edition cartoon as part of a fund-raising drive by Vindolanda fort on Hadrian's Wall.

Peter, originally from Rowlands Gill, now lives at Byrness in Northumberland and runs a gallery at Kirkharle Courtyard as well as design company Phillips Creative.

He paints scenes from the Wall and across the county, and has also carried out the design work on Vindolanda's new guidebook.

Now he has also produced a dozen cartoons based on Vindolanda and the Wall, which are on sale in the fort as postcards and prints.

"Vindolanda is a brilliant place," said Peter.

Vindolanda's Fiona Watson said: "The cartoons are very funny and are really popular."

The Vindolanda Trust has launched the first raffle in its history to raise pounds 20,000 to create a Roman pavilion and tranquil garden area. …
