gazettelive.co.uk/buyaphoto ref: 01274105 BUSINESSES who go the extra mile in their community are to be recognised with a new award.

The Gazette is today launching the Community Business Support Champion title as part of its Community Champions Awards. It will recognise local businesses that have engaged with their local community.

This is a new category for this year, sponsored by the High Tide Foundation.

The foundation launched last month to educate youngsters on careers and opportunities available. The foundation aims to provide local schools and young adults with support to raise aspirations and opportunities for young people, leading to greater job opportunities in marine and related industries on Teesside.

So far more than 45 companies have pledged support to High Tide ranging from the process sector to engineering, as well as logistics and port operations.

A spokesman said the foundation was proud to sponsor the award.

He added: "High Tide was founded from the increasing need to integrate communities with business and there will no doubt be a significant number of very worthy finalists for the award."

This year will see the Gazette host its 12th Community Champions Awards. We will once again pay tribute to the best of Teesside.

Last year saw a host of Teessiders acknowledged.

These included fundraiser, lifesaver, volunteer and family carer Paul Waugh who was voted Community Champion and fallen soldier Charlie Wood was posthumously given the Armed Forces Champion award.

Michaela Waller, who saved her siblings from their burning home, received the Outstanding Act of Bravery award.
