Abbott's Shocked to See Pompey Buying

GREG Abbott admits he is amazed at Portsmouth's spending power as Carlisle prepare to face Pompey at Brunton Park this afternoon.

The South Coast club were relegated from the Championship last season following a 10-point deduction after they went into administration for the second time in two years.

Pompey's financial woes are still not resolved and the club are facing another 10-point deduction this season - if and when they exit administration.

Yet that did not prevent boss Michael Appleton last week signing ten players on short-term one-month deals - a situation Carlisle manager Abbott finds 'staggering' - although he bears neither his opposite number nor Pompey fans any ill will.

Abbott said: "Apparently they've had no money and they've made 10 or 12 signings so that's slightly staggering.

"We're playing Portsmouth, who are a good club with good players, some players we'd like here. Mark Douglas 77 "It is amazing that we're envious of the players they've brought in and the amount of money they've managed to stump up.

"I'm pleased for Michael and I'm pleased for the club because they are a big club.

"Somebody has to be accountable for what has happened but it's not the fans' fault and it's not the manager's fault.

"He's in a situation you wouldn't envy.

It's not been easy for him, but he's coming through it and he's putting a team together." With last season's top scorer Lee Miller sidelined for a month with an ankle injury, Abbott could hand new signing Jake Jervis his debut after the 20-year-old striker completed a loan move from Championship side Birmingham City this week. Jervis, who has previously had loan spells at Swindon Town and Preston North End, insists he can deal with the added expectation which will fall upon his shoulders with Miller out of action.
