MORE than pounds 8,000 was raised for charity at the surprise birthday party for a tattoo artist blinded in a dual carriageway crash.

The Chronicle previously reported how Damian Mills has been left without his sight after a car crash he was lucky to survive.

The 25-year-old was a passenger in a Ford Ka when it slammed into a lorry on the A19 on April 22. A Mitsubishi 4x4 then ploughed into the back of the car.

He suffered injuries to his spine, ribs and pelvis and needed emergency surgery to stop him being paralysed.

Medics at first feared he might not survive the night, but he made an incredible recovery.

As Damian, from Washington, spent his birthday in May in hospital, his family decided to throw him a surprise birthday bash, while also raising money for the doctors and nurses at Newcastle's RVI who saved his life. Friends, family and tattooists gathered at the Stella in Albany, Washington, for the event, which featured an auction with prizes including oil paintings, prints of Damian's artwork, and a day's tattooing with top artists. …
