A 999 AMBULANCE operator downed a bottle of vodka then drove home from work more than three times over the limit.

Jason Blenkiron was so drunk he could barely control his Peugeot 207 during the treacherous three-mile trip.

The 42-year-old repeatedly weaved the saloon all over the road, bounced off curbs and even forced a pedestrian to jump clear when the Peugeot mounted a pavement.

Another driver was so concerned he followed Blenkiron from the Gosforth Park roundabout off the A1 in Newcastle as other motorists took evasive action to avoid a collision.

And when Blenkiron finally pulled up outside his home at Edgemount, Killingworth, North Tyneside, he quickly fell asleep behind the wheel. Jailing him for nine months at Newcastle Crown Court Judge David Wood said: "It was just good fortune you didn't collide with someone and caused serious injury.

"In the end I'm afraid this is so serious only custody can be justified. …
