MOVE over Cadel Evans Co here comes Phil Begley.

A born-again biker, Mr Begley has swapped his leather lounge for lycra as he gears up for this year's River 2 Reef bike ride on October 6.

And he's not alone.

Take a drive around Mackay on a Saturday morning and you are sure to see cyclists burning up the bitumen, many of them in training for the big event.

With more than 1000 riders expected to participate in the charity ride, to be held on October 6, Mr Begley said biking was booming in Mackay.

And why wouldn't it be?

Having lost more than five kilograms in the past two weeks, he is feeling fitter than ever.
