Crusaders Should Direct Their Anger at Real Issues

I THOUGHT we were well past the time when even a hint of amoral behaviour could be relied on to provoke several column inches from a member of the Shelton family.

My former near neighbour Lyle, on the Mort Estate, could always be relied upon to express distaste on behalf of himself and his fellow believers. The Chronicle, back in November 2004, reported that (quote) aCr Shelton yesterday launched a broadside at council processes after he failed to draw his colleagues into a debate about adult entertainment venues during this week's council meetinga.

A May 2005 heading declared (quote) aShelton a lone voice in sex debatea and goes on:

aLyle Shelton last night was truly a lone crusader.

aEven his traditional ally, Regina Albion, distanced herself from a joint press release he issued earlier saying council had become a[approximately]sex-trade friendly'.

aOn Tuesday, Cr Shelton's colleagues in the council chamber fiddled with their pens, rolled their eyes, and ahumpheda openly as he pleaded for council to take a hard line on adult entertainment.

aThey pleaded with him to move on as he was rolled again on a 7-2 vote.a

Lyle might not have won a lot of votes but he didn't flinch and didn't seem to doubt the correctness of his position on any matters to do with morals in general and sexual behaviour in particular. It seemed to run in the family.

Then he disappeared, somewhat to the relief of many of us, drifted southwards and finally finished up as something important in Canberra's Australian Christian Lobby. I quite enjoyed old Lyle; he was a quiet, well-behaved neighbour and always good for an exchange of views when I was walking my dog.

Now Letitia Shelton has hit the press, anxious to protect us from the evil tentacles of what some will describe as a strip club and others as asophisticated adult entertainmenta. …
