Standoff Was at Ex-Officer's Home

Article excerpt

A sign in the front yard of the Kingswood Road home where a man surrendered to police after a standoff Monday states starkly: Caution - Firearms in Use - Keep Out.

Tuesday, Jacksonville police would not release the name of the man, but city property records show it is owned by Edward Martin DeFoor, 73, a retired Jacksonville Sheriff's Office bomb squad officer.

In 2001 DeFoor was charged with improperly storing about 200 pounds of dynamite and C-4 explosive in a public storage facility. Those charges were dropped because he had a permit and police determined there was no criminal intent, but Tuesday a neighbor said police bomb technicians detonated something in front of the house hours after the standoff was over.

Another neighbor said she knew the man who lived there was a retired policeman named Ed. She had heard about explosives at the house and said it was a bit unnerving, but doesn't feel threatened.

Police were called to the house in response to a suicide threat about 5:30 p.m. Monday said police spokesman Shannon Hartley. The caretaker, who alerted police, left the residence unharmed.

Hartley said police knew the man was heavily armed. He surrendered about 10 p.m. and was taken for a medical evaluation.

When charged in April 2011, Luke had already been jailed for about a year in an unrelated sexual abuse case. …
