A Lucky Escape for Lorry Driver

ALORRY driver had a rude awakening yesterday morning when another heavy goods vehicle crashed into the side of his cab.

And a leading firefighter said last night that the incident at Durham Services on the A1 motorway near Bowburn, County Durham, could have involved "multiple casualties".

The dramatic incident occurred in the car park of the services at around 6am.

Another driver had left his vehicle to go into the service station but had not applied the handbrake properly and it rolled back, crashing into the cab of the sleeping driver's lorry.

Station manager Andrew Allison, from County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service, said: "The driver had been sleeping in his cab during a rest period but awoke to find himself trapped.

"The collision damaged the driver's door and pushed the lorry against the side of another, leaving the driver with no way of escaping his cab.

"There was a potential for the sleeping driver to have suffered spinal injuries so we removed the door using hydraulic cutting equipment and got him out on a stretcher with the assistance of the paramedics. …
